How Your Shop Displays Influence Customers

As a retailer, when you are arranging your product displays, you will probably be thinking about how you can make them look attractive and encourage customers to buy. However, you may not realise just how important your placement choices and layout of shop shelving are and how deeply they affect the purchasing behaviours of your customers.

Messy Displays Can Put Customers Off (Or Encourage Them to Buy!)

You might consider displays that can attract customers, but do you ever think about what can actually put them off?

Studies have shown that customers are less likely to pick food products from displays that are messy or if there are only a few of the products left.

However, perhaps most surprisingly, a messy display seemed to work for non-ingestible products. If the display looked like many people had been picking items from it, other customers were actually encouraged to make a purchase.

POP Displays Can Be Powerful

POP displays give your customers the opportunity to make one last buying decision before they reach the till. They can be incredibly useful to use for queue management, but queue management needn’t mean wasted space.

In fact, these displays are particularly powerful, especially when they are coupled with lower-priced items as customers are able to make a quick decision about whether they want to buy or not.

Consider Product Placement

Supermarkets are experts when it comes to product placement. In fact, the majority of them follow roughly the same layout as this is what has been proven to work. Whether you are running a supermarket or a small corner shop, product placement is an important element to consider.

One of the important rules that many shops follow is that eye level is buy level. The idea is that if products are placed at eye level, they are more likely to be noticed by customers so are more likely to be purchased.

Of course, not all supermarket layout rules will apply to every shop, but it is worth considering how your layout may or may not work for you.

Colours Can Be Influential

Colours are often used in marketing to convey a particular message. The same can be said for shop displays. Different colours evoke different emotions and feelings, so you can use these to your advantage based on how you want your customers to feel.

It’s no coincidence that certain colours are used extensively by different industries. The fast food industry, for example often uses red and yellow as these colours can be stimulating, whereas tech companies and social media platforms often use the colour blue which may encourage us to carry on browsing.

Reds and yellows are often used in shops to signify items that are reduced, so they instantly draw the attention of shoppers.
