Glass Shelves

Most commonly, slatwall is utilised and enhanced by timber shelves, combined with chrome or acrylic accessories but more and more retail operators are looking for glass shelving.  Up until now, glass shelving in the shopfitting industry has been very expensive to manufacture and ship, with shipping breakages making it more cost effective for customers to source it locally.  Technology and shipping has moved on and we are delighted to now supply glass shelves for Slatwall, and retail shelving……

The type of glass used is defined by the end use, i.e. furniture, vehicle glass or decorative purposes and obviously, safety when using any type of glass is paramount.  Our shelves are made from 6mm ‘tempered’ or toughened safety glass.  What does this mean?

Types of glass

‘Ordinary’ (also known as annealed) glass is not suitable for use in furniture, cabinet making or even vehicles.  It is also not suitable for use in a retail environment as when it breaks; it breaks into sharp, dagger like shards.  In this form it can be moulded and engineered to suit a range of other purposes.

‘Tempered’ (or toughened) glass is manufactured from an ordinary glass sheet.  This is cut to size and worked as necessary.  A thermal (rapid heating and cooling) or chemical process is then used to ‘toughen’ the glass.  This creates a balance in the internal and external stresses so that when it does break (toughened glass can still break), it will fracture into cube-like granular pieces that are relatively harmless.

‘Laminated’ glass or film backed glass, although manufactured differently, serve the same purpose.  This type of glass when broken, is designed to hold the sheet together thus reducing the chance of injury.  Vehicle windscreens and windows are generally manufactured using laminated glass which has been made using toughened glass.

Finally, there is ‘decorative’ glass.  It is generally ordinary glass which has been moulded, blown and etched to make vases, ornaments and other items with which to enhance our homes.

As mentioned above, our glass shelves are manufactured using 6mm tempered glass (8mm for Tegometall) and is rigorously tested for safety.  We ensure that the shelves look great and most, importantly, are safe.  Couple the shelves with our fantastic chrome heavy duty glass shelf brackets; they can make an eye catching, safe display which can hold much better weight loads than previously available shelves.  What’s more, they won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

Breakages are also much less likely during shipping now.  Our secure packaging and careful labelling system, along with our courier’s excellent handling systems, ensure that your glass shelves will reach you in tip top condition.

Shelves are available in a variety of sizes from 600mm wide to 1200mm wide and from 200mm deep to 350mm deep; and can be used on your slatwall or on your retail shelving.

What a fantastic way to draw your customers’ attention to your merchandise!
