There’s a noticeable difference in the weather recently; the rain has eased, the wind is more of a breeze than a gale and the sun has finally decided to put in an appearance! It even feels warmer. I finally realised that spring had arrived when I was driving with the window down and noticed that most of the pedestrians were walking round in t-shirts instead of winter coats and woolly hats. The other indicator was daffodils. They are standing tall and proudly showing off their wonderful yellow flowers. The grass around the showroom has had its first cut of the year too. Have you wandered round your local garden centre yet this year? You should, their displays are wonderful.
Spring usually means, amongst lots of other things, that it’s time for a bit of a ‘spring clean’. It’s time to get out the cloths, steam cleaners and all manner of cleaning equipment and take a good look at your retail shop. Your shop fittings may be looking a bit tired, a bit grubby and possibly a bit tatty; giving them a good clean and perhaps even re-arranging some merchandise units can make a tired retail display look almost like new (my mum re-arranged our lounge every year!). Don’t be tempted to miss area that you can’t see or you think aren’t visible to your customers because believe me, your customers will sense it. Get that vacuum under those shelves and into the corners!
And if you discover that some of your display fittings are a bit too far gone, it’s easy to replace them and probably for less money than you think.
All this cleaning and re-arranging will make a difference to the most important part of being a retail operator; the profit margin.
