The History of ‘Tegometall’

In the world of shopfittings many companies sing the praises of Tegometall.   Our history commenced with retail shelving and has inspired us to ensure that our customers only get the very best high quality products manufactured as environmentally friendly as possible, so I’d like to tell you a bit about the history of Tegometall..

In Blaubeuren, Germany, in the early 1950’s Rudolph Bohnacker, started to design and manufacture a simple shelving system to utilise and create space, which was easy to assemble and dissemble.  Using a ‘plug-in’ system, steel wall uprights and supports are linked together to provide sturdy yet open shelves.  His design proved to be very popular and the product range expanded very quickly as a result.  Bohnacker quickly outgrew his original premises and in 1966 the decision was made to relocate to Krauchenweis, Germany.  Rudolph planned to use the new, larger factory building to manufacture quality products and shopfitting systems under the brand name ‘Tegometall’

During the 1970’s and eighties expansion of the Tegometall system continued and associations were made with the international railway system.  Service centres were created and networked and Tegometall created the ‘Racking with integration’ system.  This new system combined the shopfitting shelving system with a pallet racking/storage system which Tegometall patented.

In the 1990’s a new purpose built factory was constructed in Sauldorf and development continued.  Rudolph’s son, Ulrich Bihnacker, took the reins from his father during this period and the company grew further with new factories being created in Hungary, Poland and Switzerland.

From the year 2000 to 2010 Tegometall became famous throughout the world for their quality and production standards.  Tegometall group founded a railway company ‘ablachtal-Bahn GmbH and acquired the decommissioned 25 mile long railway line between Mengen and Stockach.  This safeguarded the future transport service for nearby factories.   State of the art electroplating machines were installed for galvanising and chromium plating.  In Switzerland focus was on the new Decocoat finish.  A new warehouse distribution centre in the UK was constructed for the existing UK service centres meaning shorter lead times for us here in the UK.

Today The Tegometall Group employs more than 800 people worldwide and over 80,000 tons of steel are converted into Tegometall products.  They state “Our goal is to deliver a competitively priced, yet best quality, products by using the latest technology, production techniques and highest quality raw materials. We have invested in processes and techniques that best utilise the conservation of energy, water, air, packaging and raw materials. We also endeavour to utilise the most energy efficient method of transport by using rail where possible over road.”

Many companies have been inspired and have created their own unique shelving systems, many of which we are able to source and supply.

Customers often ask us how to tell whether they have Tegometall shelving or not.  It’s easy for the trained eye to see what is and isn’t Tegometall but how can you, the consumer, spot it?

The best and most obvious way is to look for a Tegometall press stamp somewhere on your shelving.  It can be found on most components but is usually seen on the shelf brackets.  Alternatively, we are happy to have a look and can usually identify what shelving system you have.  Simply take a photograph of your shelf bracket laid on a flat surface, and email the image to us and our expert technicians will cast their eye over it on your behalf.
