The Truth about Slatwall…

All you want to know about Slatwall, but never dared to ask….

What actually is Slatwall?

Slatwall (also known as slat board, slotwall and slatted panel…) is a building material most commonly used to display products in a retail setting. Slat wall is made from medium or high density fibreboard (MDF). Good quality slatwall panels are usually made from at least 130 grade MDF. Grooves are made within the panels – usually 100mm apart for ease of accessorising (although we can provide boards with a different pitch if you require). The MDF panels are then cut to size (the most useful sizes are 8’ by 4’ or the smaller 4’ by 4’ square boards) and finished appropriately….

How are slatwall panels coloured and finished?

Most top quality slatwall specialists, like us at Crown Display, supply slat boards with high pressure finishes. This means that the wood or solid colour finishes have been applied to the MDF under extremely high heat and high pressure. Not only does this make the slatwall even more durable and offer a greater load capacity, it also further enhances the appearance of the panels. The high pressure laminates can provide lovely warm wood-like veneers (such as walnut, beech and maple) as well as distinctive and clean-looking coloured displays – anything from silver or coral, to bright blue and vivid yellow! We’re bound to have a colour that fits perfectly with your shop’s colour scheme! The grooves within the panels are finished with a tinted acrylic lacquer – the colour of this depends on you, the customer’s specifications!

Do I really need slatwall panel inserts?

Inserts – easily fixed into the grooves in your slat boards, not only increase the weight load of the slatwall, they also make it look even better! Although they are not essential for your slat boards to function, the majority of retailers find the little extra spending is well worth it! The inserts are available in coloured PVC as well as aluminium – we’ve also just started supplying reflective mirrored PVC inserts – for that extra wow factor!

Inserts are not the only addition to cosmetically enhance your slatwall display – ‘Profiles’ – otherwise known as ‘corners and ends’ are also a good option. These guarantee your retail display is as smart and attractive as possible. Since so many buying decisions are made on first impressions, it makes sense to ensure that your product display is as appealing to customers as possible; not to distract, but to focus attention, and reflect the high quality of the products you are selling!

What accessories do I really need for my slatwall?

There are now numerous accessories available to optimise your slatwall display. At Crown Display we can supply you with many acrylic options, as well as the particularly stylish chrome attachments. The accessories you require really depend on the products you are looking to display, and how much space you have to fill. Some accessories, like traditional wire baskets, can be used for a wide range of products, and their contents changed according to need. Other slatwall attachments are more specific; like our chrome millinery arm – perfect for your contemporary hats display! If you are unsure which accessories would be most suited to your particular products, discuss the options with your shopfitting supplier. At Crown Display we are always happy to work with customers to find the best solution to any display query.
