Top Ten Tips for Setting up your Shop – Part 2

Last week we discussed some top tips for setting up or refitting your retail space. Advice included employing a reputable design and shopfittings company, checking the legal situation with regard to shop usage and focusing on your brand and customer style when thinking about the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of your outlet.

Here are our remaining top tips to create a stunning and lucrative shop:….

6) Build the Perfect Product Display:

A good acronym to bear in mind is KISS: ‘Keep It Simple, Sir!’ Maximising and optimising the space within your shop to create a comfortable and stimulating environment for your customers and staff can be achieved by good design coupled with choosing the best retail display equipment. Options include universally-popular Slatwall Panels, Timber Shelving and Accessories, Modular Shelving, Gridwall, and Bespoke Display Units. As discussed in previous posts, Slatwall offers an extremely versatile and economical display option. Easily installed, with a wide range of accessories that can display many different product ranges; from DVDs and books to hats and clothing, Slat Panels and inserts are supplied in a number of attractive finishes: gorgeous wood grain veneers, brightly coloured matt finishes, as well as the more luxurious reflective mirror-effects.

Tegometall shelving offers an excellent, sturdy and flexible solution for products – particularly smaller items, and especially good if you require many rows of products; tegometall shelving provides a simple and attractive display. Tegometall shelves come in both classic Jura white, and stylish silver – so if you are looking for a clean and simple display solution for your products, tegometall may be the answer.

In addition to the shelving and display equipment installed around the walls of your store, you’ll also need to consider freestanding display units throughout the shop (of course this depends on your space and planned design). Options here include slatwall-based units such as slatted gondola units or tiered display stands –particularly good for specialist garments and footwear displays. Other options include bespoke wooden counters and display units – at Crown Display we can offer customised display unit production – just let us know your specifications!

7)      Be seen! – If you can’t be seen, then who will find you?

Remember that new external signage and bus stop signs (signs that protrude out of the building) generally require local council planning permission. This can take up to two months to get approval, so get the designs for these completed as soon as possible. Again, the investment in a professional designer and sign writer will likely prove well worth it. Make sure that your window display is attractive and enticing – and regularly updated! Also remember to clean your windows regularly, to ensure passers by can view your wares appropriately!

8)      Make use of Technology

Consider the systems you intend to use for stock control, payroll, employee details and accepting payments etc. These days there are many alternatives available; choose how automated you want your system to be, and look for a system that will do everything you need it to and be easy for you and staff to use and troubleshoot.

9)      Consider Payment Points and General Navigation

Of course a major part of your customers’ experience within your shop is their actual purchase. Placement of your payment points and till blocks is important for both ease of navigation around your store and other aspects such as security. Whether you opt for a standard checkout counter, or a more elaborate, glass-covered counter, At Crown Display we can assist you through the whole process of planning and fitting out your shop – supplying all the shopfittings, including counters as required.

10)  Don’t forget the kitchen sink!

Well, Ok, you may or may not require a kitchen sink in your shop. However, you are very likely to require some kind of plumbing, and will definitely need adequate and appropriate lighting and electricity points. Make sure your needs for these are included in your original plan, as well as discussed with your designer and shopfittings supplier.
